Serdica tower
is a reintegration project of the North-Eastern tower of Serdica’s fortress. Nowadays the site needs more contemporary treatment and integration in the present. Located in the centre of Sofia, Bulgaria the tower is surrounded by a constant stream of people, crouched into small pedestrian paths. Located in an inner-block space, it’s separated by massive concrete walls from the surrounding gardens. The site is encircled by streets servicing two small parking lots, blocking the pedestrian access to the tower. The research of the Serdica fortress showed that an extension of the wall is situated under one of the two parking spaces. The project proposes the removal of the streets and parking spaces, creating wide pedestrian alleys and opening green spaces. The concrete walls are exchanged with glass railings and by modelling the terrain the ruins become more accessible.
